{'I could have killed them' - Lawson encounters near miss with F1 marshals
Formula 1 competitor Liam Lawson disclosed he came dangerously close to a life-threatening incident during Sunday's Mexican Grand Prix when two marshals crossed the track immediately ahead of his car
The concerning event occurred on the third circuit when marshals were observed on the circuit as Lawson was getting back on the race following an early pitstop to replace his broken nose section
Competitor's Live Reaction
Immediately after, Racing Bulls driver Lawson spoke to his pit wall engineer saying: "You've got to be joking? Did you witness that? I might have... taken their lives"
"I truly couldn't comprehend what I was seeing"
"I rejoined with a new set of hards, and then I got to Turn One and suddenly there were two guys sprinting across the track"
"I nearly hit one of them, honestly, it was incredibly risky"
Track Safety Questioned
"Evidently there's been a failure in communication somehow but This is the first time I've faced that before, and I haven't previously witnessed that in the past. It's absolutely inexcusable"
"We fail to grasp how on a live track track officials can be permitted to just sprint across the track like that. I have no idea why, I'm sure we'll get some form of reasoning, but it really can't happen again"
Governing Body Reviewing
Formula 1's governing body, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), is currently investigating the events
"Following a turn one incident, race control was informed that fragments were located on the track at the turning point of that curve" commented the regulatory authority
"During the third lap, safety personnel were informed and placed on standby to enter the track and clear the fragments once every vehicle had gone by"
"The moment it was realized that Lawson had made a pit stop, the orders to send officials were rescinded and a double yellow flag was displayed in that zone"
"We are still investigating what happened subsequent to that time"
